SHREVEPORT, La. – Millsaps volleyball traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana for the Centenary Halloween Tournament and split the first day. The team lost their first match to Texas-Tyler in three sets (15-25, 21-25, 14-25). They then swept Letourneau (25-17, 25-22, 27-25) to improve to 2-0 over the Yellow Jackets on the season.
Match 1:
Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) led the Majors offense with 11 kills and
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was just behind her with nine for the match.
Defensively,
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) was tied for the match lead with 15 digs while
Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La) and
Payton Passantino (Plaquemine, La.) both finished with eight digs.
Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) led the majors with 22 assists.
Millsaps was never able to take a lead in the first set. After the Majors had the score tied at five, Texas-Tyler closed out the set on a 20-10 run to take the first set.
Set two was much closer, the Majors began the set on a streak, going up 15 -11. Texas-Tyler then went on a 9-2 run to take a 20-17 lead and regain momentum. Millsaps brought the score to a one point deficit but did not have enough, falling two sets to none.
Texas-Tyler started the third set by going ahead 15-5. The Majors attempted a comeback but ended up falling 25-14, losing the match.
Match 2:
In the second meeting between the teams season, it was once again the Majors who came out on top of LeTourneau in the second match of the day. Bennett led all players with 12 kills, joining her in double figures was Petricko with 11 and
Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) with ten.
Morgan Authement (Lacombe, La.) got the starting nod and finished with eight kills.
Zamjahn led the match with 20 digs while
Meredith Gates (Broussard, La.) had ten, Stoltzfus finished with eight digs and Passantino had seven. Marsh led the match with 35 assists and also tallied eight digs.
Millsaps used a long run in the middle of the first set to break away. With the Majors on top 5-4, they went on a 15-6 run to take a 20-10 lead and take the set easily.
The second set was much tighter throughout, both teams traded points until the score was tied at 18. Millsaps then began pull away beginning with a kill by Authement. The Majors finished the set with kills by Bennett, Petricko and Marsh.
It took a late comeback and extra points to decide the third set. Millsaps found themselves trailing 24-21, they then capitalized off two LeTourneau errors and a kill from Marsh to tie things at 24. The Majors then set up Riddle for a kill to finish the match.
With the split, Millsaps is now 14-13 on the season. The Majors finish the regular season with a match against Centenary on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
