JACKSON, Miss. – In their second meeting this season, Millsaps and Centre traded sets to force a decisive fifth which the Majors ultimately came out on top of to even the season series with the Colonels (20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 15-6).
Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) led the match with 20 kills on the day, joining her in double figures was
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with 16.
Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) also had a strong performance with nine kills and 11 digs.
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) led the way defensively, she tallied a match high 33 digs while
Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La.) had 15,
Meredith Gates (Broussard, La.) finished with ten and both
Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) and
Noelle Coats (San Antonio, Texas) tallied seven digs. Marsh also had a match high 51 assists.
Mistakes made by the Millsaps offense in the early stages of the first set gave Centre a 7-2 lead. The Majors would get back into it though, bringing the score to 11-10 but they would never take the lead in the first. Centre widened the gap to 23-15 and took the first set despite a late comeback by the Majors.
Set two was all Millsaps from the start. The Majors jumped out to a 20-10 lead with kills from Bennett, Petricko and Coats. Centre then went on an 8-2 run to close the gap, but Millsaps held off the Colonels and ended it with kills from Bennett and Coats to tie the match at one set apiece.
Neither team was able to break away from each other in the third set. MIllsaps took their first timeout with the score tied at 11 and Centre took another timeout after the teams were still locked at 16. Towards end of the set, the score was still tied at 23 until Centre took control and scored the next two points to finish the third and go up 2-1 in the match.
MIlsaps ran out to a quick 18-13 lead in the fourth set, then Centre scored five straight to tie the score. The Majors then outscored the Colonels 7-3 to force a decisive fifth set.
It was all Millsaps in the fifth, the Majors got up to an 8-2 lead and did not look back. Gates ended the match with a kill off an assist from Marsh to give Millsaps the victory.
Zamjahn sits just 33 digs away from reaching two-thousand for her career.
MIllsaps improves to 9-9 on the season and 4-4 in the SAA. The Majors are back at it on Sunday as they take on SAA foe Sewanee at the Hangar Dome at 12:00 p.m.
