JACKSON, Miss. – After taking the first two sets of its Southern Athletic Association (SAA) volleyball match against Sewanee, Millsaps College saw the Tigers come back to win the next two sets to force a decisive fifth. The Majors took the deciding fifth set, winning its second straight five-set match, 25-12, 30-28, 22-25, 22-25, 15-6. Sophomores
Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) and
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led Millsaps with 19 kills each.
Millsaps (10-9, 5-4 SAA) started the match quickly, hitting .414 in the opening set to overpower Sewanee (8-10. 2-7 SAA). The Majors jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a kill from Bennett and never looked back to grab the early lead in the contest.
Set two proved to be much closer, as neither team could pull away. Millsaps held a four-point edge on an ace by senior
Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La.), but Sewanee eventually came back and tied it at 22-all on a Majors attack error. It was back and fourth after that, with a block by Stephanie Price knotting things back up at 28-28 for Sewanee. Bennett then put away a kill and an attack error by the Tigers gave Millsaps the set.
In the third set Millsaps held an 11-4 edge, but Sewanee battled back, eventually tying the score at 22-22 on an attack error. The Tigers went on to close the set on a 5-0 run, finishing it on a kill from Elizabeth Gill. Millsaps came back from an early deficit in the fourth set, with a pair of kills from Bennett tying the score at 14-all. The Tigers pulled back out to a 20-15 lead, but the Majors rattled off five straight to get back into it. With the score tied at 23-23 Sewanee was able to put the set in their column and tie the match up after a kill from Mason Gardella and a block by Gardella and Destiny Stewart.
A pair of early kills by Bennett gave Millsaps an early edge in set five and the Majors never looked back. They eventually built a 13-3 lead after a kill by Petricko, going on to take the match on anther kill from Petricko off of an assist from senior
Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas).
Marsh finished with 46 assists for Millsaps, with senior
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) pacing the defense with 31 digs.
