JACKSON, Miss. – In a tightly contested Southern Athletic Association (SAA) women's soccer battle, Sewanee was able to make a first half goal stand up as the Tigers came away with the 1-0 victory at Harper Davis Field.
Both teams battled fairly evenly for the entire game, with both defenses limiting the scoring opportunities. Millsaps (1-10-1, 0-4 SAA) had the first one of the contest when junior
Grayston Barron (Little Rock, Ark.) found herself open to the right of the Sewanee goal. She put a shot on target, but goalkeeper Savannah Williams made the stop.
In the 32
nd minute Sewanee (5-6-1, 3-1 SAA) picked up what proved to be the game winner when Doris Elis found the ball in a scramble in front of the Majors goal and slipped it in for the 1-0 lead. The Tigers managed to get two more shots on goal in the first half, but senior
Olivia Gattuso (Memphis, Tenn.) stopped both to keep it a one-goal game.
It continued to be a battle of the defenses in the second half. Gattuso turned away all four shots she faced, while Williams made three saves in the half, including one on a shot by senior
Molly Ambrose (Pensacola, Fla.). Millsaps had a good chance in the 87
th minute to tie it up when freshman
Alyssa McCarron (Baton Rouge, La.) managed to get in for a close shot, but her try slipped just wide of the goal.
