Majors Get Past Belhaven For Opening Night Victory

JACKSON, Miss. – In the home opener of the 2017-18 season, the Millsaps women's basketball picked up their first win over crosstown rival Belhaven, defeating the Blazers 59-53 at the Hangar Dome Wednesday night.

Dia Fortenberry led all players in both points and rebounds, scoring 17 and pulling down nine boards. Megan Donaldson joined her in double figures with ten points and Braxton Thomas had a complete game with eight points, eight rebounds and three steals. Caroline Guilbeau finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists, going 7-10 from the free throw line.

With Millsaps down 14-13 entering the second quarter, the Majors outscored the Blazers 17-9. Donaldson took over and scored eight out of her ten points in the second. She gave the Majors the lead with 5:47 to go with a layup, less then a minute later, she connected on her first three of the game.

After Millsaps forced a turnover with 3:56 to go until the half, Anna Wilson collected an offensive rebound and converted on a layup to give the Majors a 25-18 lead. Kasi Matthews extended the lead with a layup with 2:18 to go and Donaldson ended the half with another three to give Millsaps a 30-23 lead at halftime.

Millsaps once again outscored Belhaven in the third quarter, this time 17-13. Fortenberry scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half, including eight in the third quarter. Taelor Manning's layup with 6:02 left in the third gave the Majors an 11 point lead. Fortenberry then scored seven points in the final three minutes of the quarter, propelling the Majors to a 47-36 lead, heading into the fourth.

Belhaven began the fourth quarter by going on a 9-2 run to bring their deficit to four points with 4:59 to go in the game. As the clock was running low, Guilbeau converted on two free throws and Fortenberry made two layups in the final minutes to hold off Belhaven and secure the opening night win.

Millsaps begins their season 1-0 and heads to Sherman, Texas on Saturday where they take on Centenary in the SCAC/SAA Challenge. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
