Millsaps Comes From Behind to Beat Centenary in OT on Day One of SCAC/SAA Challenge

SHERMAN, Texas. – On the first day of the SCAC/SAA Challenge on hosted by Austin College, the Millsaps women's basketball team made a fourth quarter comeback to force overtime and get their second win of the year, 65-60 over Centenary on Saturday.

It was an even scoring spread for Millsaps, who got contributions from many players. Freshman Dia Fortenberry continued her strong start by putting up 12 points to go along with seven rebounds, junior Millicent Butler was also in double figures with 12 points going 2-2 from three. Sophomore Caroline Guilbeau did a bit of everything, finishing with eight points, ten assists and six rebounds.

After a slow start in the first quarter, Taelor Manning connected on a three to give Millsaps their first lead of the game. Centenary would take back the lead, but it would not last long as a Megan Donaldson three and a basket by Braxton Thomas quickly put the Majors back on top at the 2:32 mark. Millsaps closed out the first on a three by Butler and two free throws by Fortenberry to hold a 17-14 advantage.

After both teams traded baskets to begin the second quarter, a 7-0 run by the Majors capped off with a three by Butler put Millsaps ahead 24-16 with 5:49 to go before the half. Centenary then scored 11 straight points over the final minutes of the half and Millsaps found themselves down 27-26 at the break.

Centenary outscored Millsaps 19-12 in the third quarter to give the Ladies a 46-38 advantage going into the fourth.

Millsaps slowly chipped away in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. With the Majors down by nine, Brazia Jones hit a much-needed three to make it a six-point game with 4:06 to go. Then layups by Anna Wilson and Fortenberry cut the Centenary lead to three. Millsaps took a timeout trailing by three with 13 seconds to go, Guilbeau found Donaldson for a three to tie the game at 55 with seven seconds left to force overtime.

Neither side could break away from each other until late in the overtime period. With the score tied at 60 with under a minute to go, Millsaps closed out the game playing strong defense and converting on their free throws to get the win.

Millsaps continues to play well in the early stages of the season. Now 2-0 on the year, the Majors are back in action for the final day of the SCAC/SAA Challenge where they take on the host Austin College at 1:00 p.m.
