SHERMAN, Texas. – Millsaps came up short on the second day of the SCAC/SAA Challenge to the hosts Austin College, 83-63 Sunday afternoon.
Freshman
Dia Fortenberry led all players with 21 points on 6-10 shooting and 9-11 from the free throw line. Junior
Braxton Thomas had with a near double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds with two blocks, junior
Millicent Butler made two threes, finishing with eight points and freshman
Anna Thigpen came off the bench to post seven points and seven rebounds.
Millsaps found themselves trailing 7-0 early in the game, but would get some much-needed baskets to keep them close during the first quarter. With the Majors down 15-8,
Brazia Jones and
Taelor Manning teamed up for two straight baskets. Manning found Jones for a layup and minutes later, Jones came away with a steal and manning layed it in to make it a 15-12 deficit with 2:34 left in the first. After Austin College extended their lead, two threes by
Megan Donaldson made the score 25-18 heading into the second quarter.
Fortenberry scored nine points in the second quarter on 3-4 shooting, but the Roos outscored the Majors 27-17, making the halftime score 52-35.
Millsaps was never able to make much of a run in the second half but did improve on the defensive end, holding Austin College to 17 points in the third and 14 in the fourth. The Majors outscored the Roos 15-14 in the fourth with Butler scoring all of her eight points in the quarter.
After dropping their first game of the season, the Majors are now 2-1. They will be back in action on Saturday, November 25th where they will host the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic. Millsaps takes on LeTourneau at 3:00 p.m. at the Hangar Dome.
