Sam Kohnke scored a season high 18 points and grabbed eight rebound for the Majors Sunday afternoon in the teams 97-73 loss to Howard Payne in final day of the Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic. Junior
Michael Sullivan was also in double figures with 11 points.
Kohnke got out to a fast start, nailing consecutive threes to put the Majors ahead 6-0 in the opening minutes of the game. Millsaps hung onto a slim lead during the first ten minutes of the first half.
She'Chem Grant hit a three and
Tysin Meads to give the Majors a 13-8 lead with 12:57 to go in the half.
After Kohnke made a layup, Howard Payne tied the game at 15 with a jumper and proceeded to close out the final 11 minutes on a 30-14 run to bring the score to a 45-29 Howard Payne lead at halftime.
James Turner started the second with a three and Kohnke followed with a basket to bring the Majors to within 11 in the opening minutes of the half. Both teams traded buckets until Millsaps went on a 9-2 run with baskets by Meads,
Joshua Miller and
Buck Blanz to make it a ten point deficit (58-48) with 12:55 to go in the game.
That was the closest the Majors would come to Howard Payne. Despite scoring 44 points in the second, Howard Payne put up 52 to keep their lead intact for the rest of the game.
Millsaps falls to 1-4 on the season. After a long wait, the Majors will finally get to play their season opener on Tuesday against crosstown rival Belhaven at the Hangar Dome at 7:00 p.m.
