Majors Drop Close Contest to Wildcats on Final Day of Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic

JACKSON, Miss. – Freshman Dia Fortenberry posted her first career double-double with 31 points and 15 rebounds to go along with three steals in the Majors 84-79 loss to Louisiana College Sunday afternoon. Junior Braxton Thomas finished the day with ten points and five rebounds.

Millsaps also had contributions off the bench, sophomore Megan Donaldson scored nine points while freshman Montori Weber and senior Brazia Jones each had eight. Freshman Anna Thigpen came away with 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Fortenberry came out to a blazing start putting up the Majors first seven points in the opening two minutes of play. The Wildcats regained their focus and went on top 13-9 midway through the first quarter. That was until Donaldson knocked down two threes, 40 seconds apart to give Millsaps a 15-13 lead. Louisiana College closed the first quarter by scoring six points to take a 22-19 lead.

LC opened the second by hitting two baskets. Jones kept the score close with a three to make it a 26-22 Wildcat lead in the opening minute of the quarter. Donaldson hit another three pointer to bring the Majors to within two with 7:38 to go until the half. LC outscored the Majors 14-6 to close out the half and take a 42-32 lead into halftime.

Both sides played tight in the third. Fortenberry scored eight points in the quarter and Thigpen pulled down six rebounds in eight minutes of action. LC outscored the Majors 22-20 in the third to take a 64-52 lead going into the fourth.

Millsaps fell behind by 15 with 5:11 to go in the game. They then got some key baskets in the final minutes by Fortenberry, Jones, Thomas and Weber to bring the deficit to 80-75 with a minute to go. The Wildcats then held off the Majors by making their free throws to hand the Majors the loss.

Millsaps drops to 2-3 on the season. They are off until Tuesday, December 5th when they travel across the street to take on Belhaven at 5:30 p.m.
