JACKSON, Miss. – For the second time this season, the Millsaps women's basketball team took down their crosstown rival Belhaven, this time on the road, 62-41 Tuesday night.
Junior
Millicent Butler led the Majors with 18 points on 7-12 shooting and 4-8 from three-point range while also pulling down five rebounds. Freshman
Dia Fortenberry was also in double figures with ten points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Freshman
Taelor Manning came off the bench to finish the night with seven points.
Anna Wilson got the game started with a mid-range jumper and Butler kept the offensive pressure coming with her first three to give the Majors a 5-4 lead with 7:12 to go in the first quarter. After Belhaven tied it at five, Millsaps finished the first on an 8-3 run to take a 13-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
Manning scored the first five points of the second quarter give the Majors an 18-8 lead in the early going. Belhaven was able to find their offense, but a
Braxton Thomas jumper, a
Kasi Matthews three and an
Anna Thigpen layup extended the lead to 25-12 with 1:46 to go in the half. Butler hoisted up a deep three in the closing seconds of the half that found nothing but net to make it 28-15 at the break.
Fortenberry came alive in the third, scoring six points in the first two minutes of the quarter. Butler and
Megan Donaldson each knocked down a three to give the Majors a commanding 44-25 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Unlike the last meeting, Millsaps would not allow Belhaven to climb back into the game. Strong defense along with threes by
Montori Weber and
Rebecca Harris propelled the Majors to the win.
Millsaps improves to 3-3 on the season. They are off until Thursday the 14th when they host Austin College at the Hangar Dome at 1:00 p.m.
