JACKSON, Miss. – Junior
Michael Sullivan led the Majors with 24 points, scoring 22 of them in the first half, and six rebounds to lead the Majors over Austin College, 81-55 Thursday afternoon.
Joining Sullivan in double figures was sophomore
Buck Blanz who scored 13 points and sophomore
James Turner who finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench. Freshman
Matt Owens made his first appearance since the first game of the season and scored four points while sophomore
She'Chem Grant also returned from injury after missing the last two games.
After neither team was able to break away from each other over the first ten minutes of the game, the score was tied at 18 with 10:38 to go in the first half. Turner made a layup to put the Majors on top and they began to pull away.
Saxton Becker kept the offense going with a basket, Sullivan found his rhythm scoring 13 points in the final 6:49 of the first half. Turner and Grant both hit threes and key baskets by Blanz propelled the Majors to a 29-9 run over the final ten minutes of the first half to take a 47-27 lead at halftime.
Blanz and
Joshua Miller opened the second half with back-to-back baskets and
Sam Kohnke kept things rolling with a triple to put the Majors on top 54-30 with 18:10 to go. Millsaps maintained their lead throughout the second half, Blanz scored nine of his points in the second while Turner had six as the Majors finished strong.
The Majors held Austin College to just 55 points, their lowest points allowed this season. Millsaps shot 52 percent for the game while Austin College was held to just 35.6 percent and 25 percent on threes. The Majors also outrebounded the Roos 38-26 and knocked down nine three pointers. Millsaps won both meetings against Austin College this season.
Millsaps improves to 3-5 on the season. They play their final game before winter break on Saturday at Centenary starting at 3:00 p.m.
