JACKSON, Miss. – Playing in their first home game in over two weeks, the Millsaps women's basketball fell to Austin College 66-59 at the Hangar Dome on Thursday afternoon.
Junior
Braxton Thomas led the Majors with 14 points, all of which she scored in the second quarter, to go along with three assists, two rebounds, a steal and a block. Freshman
Taelor Manning finished with nine points, four assists and three rebounds off the bench and sophomore
Megan Donaldson also came off the bench to score seven.
Austin College was in the lead for most of the first quarter, but the Majors stuck around with some key threes early on. Manning's three with 6:17 to go brought the score to 7-6, after more baskets by the Roos, Donaldson hit a three to make it a 16-11 deficit with 3:20 to go in the first. Austin College finished the quarter on a 5-1 run to take a 21-12 lead at the end of the first.
A big second quarter led by Thomas put the Majors on top by the end of the first half. Donaldson and
Montori Weber each hit threes to make it a 26-21 Roo lead with 7:45 to go in the half. After Austin College took a 30-23 lead, Thomas went on a 9-0 run by herself to give the Majors a 33-30 lead with two minutes left in the second. Millsaps closed out the half with baskets in the final minutes to take a 39-33 lead at the break.
In the third, Austin College upped their defensive intensity, outscoring the Majors 14-7 holding Millsaps to just three made field goals. A layup by the Roos with 43 seconds left in the third put them on top 47-46 to go heading into the fourth.
Austin College opened the fourth on a 7-2 run to take a 54-48 lead with 5:02 left in the game. Millsaps closed the gap to two after Manning's basket and free throws by
Brazia Jones with 3:40 to go. The Majors kept it close down the stretch,
Anna Thigpen grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup, then
Millicent Butler's three with 36 seconds made it 62-59 deficit. Austin College then converted on their free throws in the final seconds to hold off the Majors.
Millsaps drops to 3-4 on the season. They will travel to face Centenary for the next game on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
