SHREVEPORT, La. – Senior
Brazia Jones led the Majors offense with 12 points while grabbing four rebounds and had three assists in the Majors 78-63 loss at Centenary Saturday afternoon.
Also in double figures was freshman
Dia Fortenberry who had 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore
Megan Donaldson finished with 11 points as well. Sophomore
Anna Wilson nearly posted a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds while junior
Braxton Thomas had a big day defensively with seven blocks to go with six rebounds.
Millsaps got out to a slow start, only scoring six points in the first quarter. After the Majors fell behind 5-0, Jones made two free throws to give Millsaps their first points with 2:59 left in the first. Donaldson then converted on a layup and
Taelor Manning made two at the line to make the score 7-6, but Centenary scored the next six points to end the first and bring the sore to 13-6.
Centenary began the second on a 11-5 run to bring their lead to 24-11 with 4:38 until halftime. Donaldson stopped the run with a three and Wilson converted an and-one to bring the deficit to 24-17 with 3:58 to go. The Ladies closed out the first half on a 12-3 run to take a 36-20 lead into the halftime break.
The third was the only quarter where the Majors outscored the Ladies, holding a 27-22 advantage.
Millicent Butler started things off with a triple and Thomas followed with a basket. Millsaps fell behind by as many as 20 with 4:12 to go in the third. But the Majors closed out the third on a 19-10 run to close the gap to 58-47 heading into the fourth. Jones scored eight of her 12 points in the third.
The Majors were held off of their comeback effort and were outscored 20-16 in the fourth quarter. Fortenberry scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
With the loss, the Majors are now 3-5 on the season. They will now prepare for their final game before winter break when they take on Tougaloo College on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
