JACKSON, Miss. – In their final game before the holiday break, Millsaps found themselves behind by 18 points at halftime and rallied back, making it just a three point game down the stretch. But Tougaloo held off the home team to hand the Majors a 65-59 loss Monday afternoon.
Sophomore
Megan Donaldson made six threes off the bench to finish with 20 points, 11 of them came in the fourth quarter. Freshman
Dia Fortenberry came away with nine points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists while junior
Braxton Thomas had seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Freshman
Taelor Manning finished with eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.
After a slow start where Millsaps fell behind 11-0, Donaldson hit her first three to get the Majors on the board with 6:27 to go. Tougaloo then went on a 10-0 run that was stopped by a three by
Millicent Butler to make it an 18-7 deficit with 2:21 left in the first. Thomas finished the quarter with a three at the buzzer to make it 24-10 at the end of the first.
Millsaps stayed with the Lady Bulldogs in the second. The bench came through with the offense, scoring all of the Majors points in the quarter. Manning came away with five while Donaldson,
Brazia Jones,
Amber Newell, and
Rebecca Harris all hit shots. Despite scoring 15 points in the quarter, Tougaloo put up 19 points to hold a 43-25 advantage at halftime.
Both teams traded baskets in the early going of the third. Millsaps found themselves behind 53-32 with 4:18 left in the quarter. That was when the Majors closed out the third on a 9-3 run with a three by Donaldson and baskets from Fortenberry, jones and Thomas to make it a 56-40 deficit heading into the fourth.
The Majors began the fourth on a 9-1 run to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 57-49 with 7:15 to go. After three points by Tougaloo, Manning hit a jumper, Donaldson sunk back-to-back threes and Jones made one at the line to bring it to just a three point game (61-58) with 1:49 left. Tougaloo then got a layup back and converted their free throws in the final minute to escape and hand the Majors the loss.
Millsaps drops to 3-6 on the season. The Majors will head home for the holiday break and will be off until December 29th when they take on Washington and Jefferson in Nashville for the Music City Classic at Trevecca Nazarene University for a 5:00 p.m. start.
