MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 24, 2017) – Trailing 2-0, Millsaps College tied the game with two runs in the third and then scored three more times in the fourth to take the lead on its way to a 9-4 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Junior
Chris Guerin (Madisonville, La.) started for the Majors and gave up just one earned run over 7.1 innings to pick up the victory.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (1-3) took advantage of a first inning error to score the first run of the game. The Crusaders then opened a 2-0 advantage in the third when Robbie Gillen led off the inning with a walk. He then moved up on a ground out and a single before scoring on a sac fly.
Millsaps (5-5) answered in the bottom half of the inning when junior
Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.) led off with a triple to center and then scored on a ground out. Junior
Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.) then reached when he was hit by a pitch. He stole second, coming around to score on a base hit by sophomore
Jimmy Fondren (Pascagoula, Miss.). The Majors then took the lead for good in the fourth when junior
Andy Page (Warrenton, Va.) singled in junior
Chase Callaway (Brandon, Miss.), who had led off with a single. A pair of passed balls later in the inning led to two more runs and a 5-2 Millsaps lead.
UMHB cut it to 5-3 in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Mark Frankhouser, but Millsaps answered in the bottom half of the inning when Page singled through the left side to score Callaway who had led off the inning with a double. A pair of RBI doubles in the seventh by senior
Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) and Fondren gave the Majors an 8-3 lead that was enough to put the game in the win column for Millsaps.
Guerin gave up five hits in the start while striking out three and walking a pair to improve to 2-0. Page, Breland and Callaway all went 3-for-4 to lead a 12-hit Millsaps attack.
Frankhouser led UMHB with three hits in four trips, with Mason Schuh driving in a pair of runs for the Crusaders. Nathan Kent started and took the loss, giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits over 3.1 innings.
Millsaps will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Greenville College at 10:30 a.m. at Rhodes College's Stauffer Field.
