Memphis, Tenn. (Feb. 25, 2017) – Greenville College took advantage of six errors by Millsaps College, scoring four unearned runs that led to a 5-2 win in non-conference baseball action in Memphis. Junior
Andy Page (Warrenton, Va.) had a pair of hits and drove in a run to lead the Majors.
Greenville (1-1) used a pair of errors in the first inning to push across the first run of the game. Jesse Getz led off with a single, moving to third on a pair of miscues before scoring on a groundout.
Millsaps (5-6) also took advantage of mistakes by the Panthers, tying the game bottom of the fourth. A pair of base hits and a sacrifice put runners on second and third with two away for the Majors. Senior
Logan Patterson (Hopkinsville, Ky.) then hit a grounder to second that was misplayed, allowing senior
Seth Trulock (Taylorville, Ill.) to score.
It was not tied long as Greenville game back in the top of the fifth to score a pair. The Panthers loaded the bases on a hit batter and a pair of singles for Mike Harden who hit a sac fly to left to break the tie. Joe Wood then followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.
Greenville added two more in the seventh, with the first coming in on a single by Shane Olmstead. Two more Millsaps errors led to another run as the Panthers upped their lead to 5-1.
A two-out rally saw Millsaps load the bases in the eighth, with the Majors coming to within three on a RBI single to short by Page. That would prove to be it, however, as Greenville reliever, Klaiton Wolff, held Millsaps to just a single in the ninth to allow the Panthers to come away with the victory.
Jonah Moore started for Greenville and picked up the win, tossing five innings and giving up just one unearned run on five hits. Junior
Daniel Adams (Union Springs, Ala.) started and took the loss for Millsaps, giving up eight hits and three unearned runs over 4.2 innings of work.
In addition to Page, freshman
Jon Dale Dieckman (Madison, Miss.) also had a pair of hits for the Majors. Getz led Greenville with three hits while Olmstead drove in a pair of for the Panthers.
Millsaps will wrap up its trip to Memphis tomorrow when the Majors will play Webster University at 2:00 p.m.
