Box Score
Memphis, Tenn. (Feb. 26, 2017) – Shaking off a seven-run first inning by its opponent, the Millsaps College baseball came back late in the game when it scored 10 runs over the final three innings to come away with a 13-11 victory over Webster University. Junior
Chase Callaway (Brandon, Miss.) scored what proved to be the winning run on an error in the eighth inning, capping off a four-run rally.
It did not look good for Millsaps (6-6) at the start of the game. Connor Wardlaw led off the bottom of the first for Webster (2-1), smacking a home run to left. The Gorlocks later loaded the bases, with Matt Wollnik delivering a two-run double to make it 3-0. Webster wound up sending 11 hitters to the plate in the inning, banging out six hits on its way to a 7-0 lead.
Millsaps started its comeback in the second when senior
Seth Trulock (Taylorville, Ill.) doubled with two down to score the first two runs of the game for the Majors. Both teams scored single runs in the fourth to make it 8-3 in Webster's favor before the wild ending of the game started in the seventh
In the top of the inning Millsaps put its first three runners on before junior
Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.) drew a walk to force in the first run. Sophomore
Jimmy Fondren (Pascagoula, Miss.) then drove a ball through the left side for a two-run single. The Majors again loaded the bases, this time with two down, drawing back-to-back walks that tied the game at 8-all. Webster did not go quietly, however, coming right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run home run off the bat of Wollnik to put the Gorlocks back on top, 11-8
Once again Millsaps rallied, this time with four in the eighth. Sophomore
Connor Woodall (Madison, Miss.) started things with a one-out, RBI single. The Majors then loaded the bases on another base hit before freshman
Jon Dale Dieckman (Madison, Miss.) tied the game with a two-run, pinch hit, single to left. Millsaps again loaded the bases on a walk, before an error allowed Callaway to score and give the Majors their first lead of the contest.
That was all that junior
Jacob Mardick (The Woodlands, Texas) needed as he held Webster to one hit over the final two innings to pick up the victory. That finished off a strong performance for the righty as he came in from the bullpen in the first inning to record the final out of the frame. He finished going 8.1 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs while striking out eight.
At the plate Woodall, senior
Logan Patterson (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and junior
Lassere (Hoover, Ala.) all had a pair of hits to lead an 12-hit attack. Trulock, Dieckman and Fondren all finished with two RBI for the Majors.
After taking 2-of-3 in Memphis, Millsaps will return home to Twenty Field where the Majors will local foe Bellhaven University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
