JACKSON, Miss. (Feb. 28, 2017) – Belhaven University scored four times in the sixth inning to break open a close game and then held off a late rally by Millsaps College to walk away with an 8-6 win in non-conference baseball action this evening at Twenty Field. Senior
Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) drove in a pair of runs for the Majors, while Will Costinett launched a three-run home run for the Blazers.
Neither squad could get anything going in the early innings. Junior
Kenny Wright (Louisville, Miss.) started and worked around three hits and four walks to keep Belhaven (7-3) scoreless over the first five innings. Blazers starter, David Hall, did not give up a hit until the fifth, setting down nine straight at one point.
In the fifth Millsaps (6-7) broke through for the first run of the game when sophomore
Brennan Ducote (Broussard, La.) singled with two out and then came around on a double by junior
Chase Callaway (Brandon, Miss.).
Belhaven got to Wright in the top of the sixth, however, when a walk and a single put two on for Kreg Garner who doubled in the first run for the Blazers. Costinett followed with his home run to make it 4-1. The Blazers then looked to have the game in control after scoring another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth on a two-run home run off the bat of Garner.
Two hit batters and a walk started a rally for Millsaps in the bottom half of the eighth. Junior
Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.) drew the second walk of the inning to bring in the first run. With the bases still loaded Ogletree singled and then made for second on the throw in from right. The throw was cut off by the first baseman, but his throw to second to get Ogletree sailed into left field with all four runs scoring on the play to make it 7-6.
Belhaven then increased its lead to two runs in the ninth on a Daniel Ammirati RBI single. The Majors put their first two runners aboard in their half of the inning on a walk and a single, bringing in Austin Douglas out of the bullpen, the seventh pitcher of the night for the Blazers. Millsaps attempted a double-steal, but the lead runner was cut down at third and Douglas then struck out the next hitter. After an error put two on, he picked up a fielder's choice grounder to end the game.
Costinett and Garner each finished with three RBI, with Garner going 2-for-3 and scoring twice. Six different hitters picked up the hits for Millsaps.
Hall picked up the win, giving up just two hits and one run over his five innings., with Douglas notching his first save of the season. Wright took the loss for Millsaps, giving up seven hits and five runs over 6.2 innings.
Millsaps will host Emory University in a two-game series this weekend in its next action. The first game will be on Saturday at Twenty Field starting at 1:00 p.m.
