Sewanee Takes Two From Millsaps

Majors Open SAA Season In Tennessee

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Mar. 11, 2017) – Millsaps College scored first in both games of a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) baseball doubleheader, but Sewanee came back in each contest, scoring in the bottom of the ninth to take game one, 3-2, before taking the second game by a 5-2 score. Junior Andy Page (Warrenton, Va.) had four hits over the two games for Majors.

Game 1

Millsaps (8-10, 0-2 SAA) got off to a quick start in the opener, scoring twice in the first inning. With one down, Page and junior Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.) singled to put runners on the corners. Senior Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) hit into a fielder's choice to score the first run, with an error on the play leaving runners on first and second. A second error then allowed Breland to score to make it 2-0.

That proved to be all that the Majors would be able to get off of Drew Mancuso, the starter for Sewanee (9-8, 2-0 SAA). He allowed just three more hits the rest of the way and struck out five as he picked up the complete game victory. Millsaps also received a strong start from junior Daniel Adams (Union Springs, Ala.) who allowed five hits and one run over five innings, walking three and striking out four.

A double steal gave Sewanee its first run in the fifth. The Tigers then tied it in the seventh when a passed ball and a wild pitch led to a score. With the game still tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Poole led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice. Millsaps then intentionally walked the bases loaded, but Jared Demkowicz lofted a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score the winning run.

Game 2

Millsaps came up with the first run in the second game as well. In the second junior Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.) led off and was hit by a pitch. He then moved to second on a base hit off the bat of junior Chase Calloway (Brandon, Miss.) and then came around to score on an RBI single from freshman Harrison Hicks (Hattiesburg, Miss.).

Junior Chris Guerin (Madisonville, La.) started for Millsaps and held Sewanee to just three singles over the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth when he gave up a walk and a bunt single to open the inning. He retired the next two hitters, but another base hit loaded the bases for Trey Atkins, who delivered a two-run single up the middle. Mancuso then doubled in two more before an RBI single by Beau Allen made it 5-0.

Millsaps attempted a rally in the top of the seventh putting two on via a walk and a hit batter, bringing Tyler Minkkinen out of the Tigers' bullpen. He gave up a single to Breland to load the bases and then a walk to Ogletree to make it 5-2. He recovered, however, getting the next two Majors on a strikeout and a fly to left to end it.

A single game tomorrow starting at Noon will close out the three-game SAA series between the Majors and Tigers.
