Millsaps Strikes Early to Defeat Eureka, 9-5

Ogletree, Lassere Belt Home Runs for the Majors

JACKSON, Miss. (Mar. 8, 2017) – After spotting Eureka College a one-run lead, Millsaps College scored three times in the first and second innings on its way to a 9-5 non-conference baseball win this evening. Senior Lee Ogletree (Raymond, Miss.) had the big hit for the Majors, a three-run home run in the first.

Eureka (1-2) struck in the top of the first when Ray Vogel's double to right center scored Braxten Ary, who had led the game off with a two-base hit. The lead did not last long for the Red Devils, however. Millsaps (8-8) saw its first two hitters in the bottom half of the inning reach on an error and a walk. With one down Ogletree launched a shot out in left, putting the Majors on top 3-1.

Millsaps never trailed again. Eureka pulled to within one run on a run-scoring single in the top of the second by Kyle Maki, but the Majors put up another three-spot in the bottom half of the inning. The first run scored on a throwing error before senior Logan Patterson (Hopkinsville, Ky.) doubled in another runner. Junior Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.) brought home the third run on a ground out, putting Millsaps in charge, 6-2.

Junior Wes Lassere (Thibodaux, La.) led off the fifth with his second home run of the season, starting another three-run rally for Millsaps. A single and a walk put two more Majors on, with freshman Jon Dale Dieckman (Madison, Miss.) bringing in one on a ground out and the third run scoring on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Eureka scored one in the sixth and two more in the ninth, but the Millsaps bullpen did its job as the Majors came home with the victory. Freshman Langston Haden (Asheville, N.C.), the second of five pitchers for Millsaps, threw two strong innings to pick up his first collegiate victory by allowing just one hit. Junior Daniel Adams (Union Springs, Ala.) also pitched a pair of scoreless innings for the Majors.

Patterson and sophomore Connor Woodall (Brandon, Miss.) had a pair of hits to lead a nine-hit attack for Millsaps. Four players finished with two hits for Eureka, with Dusty Nace getting a pair of doubles for the Red Devils.

Millsaps will open Southern Athletic Association play this weekend when it travels to Sewanee for a three-game series. The Majors and Tigers will get things started with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11 starting at Noon.
