Berry Takes SAA Series Opener from Millsaps

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (Apr. 21, 2017) – Berry College overcame an early deficit against Millsaps College, unleashing a 21-hit attack that led the Vikings to a 12-2 win in a Southern Athletic Association baseball game.  Junior Andy Page (Warrenton, Va.) had three hits in three trips to lead the Majors.

Millsaps (16-21, 7-11 SAA) opened the scoring in the second when the Majors loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batter with one away. Page then stepped to the plate and lofted a fly to left that was deep enough to score sophomore Brennan Ducote (Lafayette, La.) to score to make it 1-0.

Berry (20-18, 9-10 SAA) answered in the bottom half of the inning when the Vikings strung together four consecutive singles that led to three runs and a 3-1 advantage. It was a lead that Berry would not give up the rest of the way.

In the fourth Millsaps pulled to within a run when Page singled, moved to second on a balk, and then came around to score on an RBI single by junior Cavan Breland (Hoover, Ala.). Berry again scored in its half of the inning, however, plating two runs on an RBI triple by Alfred Francis and a sac fly off the bat of Slade Dale.

After a scoreless fifth, Berry put the game away in the sixth when the Vikings scored four more runs on five hits, including a two-run single by Casey Whitaker. The Vikings then ended it early with three more in the seventh that invoked the 10-run rule, with Whitaker again delivering a two-run single and Jacob Delk ending the game with a double to left center.

Trey Rampy started and picked up the win for Berry, holding Millsaps to just the two runs on seven hits over five innings. Ben Coker threw the final two innings and allowed just one hit to pick up a save. Every starter had at least two hits for Berry, with Alfred Francis going 5-for-5 for the Vikings.

Junior Chase Callaway (Brandon, Miss.) joined Page with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 for the Majors. Junior Chris Guerin (Madisonville, La.) started for Millsaps and was tagged with the loss.

Millsaps and Berry will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Central time.
