JACKSON, Miss. – In its opening match of the 2017 season, the Millsaps College women's soccer team squared off against the University of the Ozarks at Harper Davis Field in the first match of the Millsaps Soccer Tournament. In a closely contested game the Majors came out on the short end of a 1-0 score. Junior
Grayston Barron (Little Rock, Ark.) and senior
Molly Ambrose (Pensacola, Fla.) each had a pair of shots to lead Millsaps.
Not many scoring opportunities were created in the first half as the teams battled to a scoreless draw over the first 45 minutes. Ozarks (1-0) got off a couple of quick shots in the 32
nd minute, but one was turned away by senior goalkeeper
Olivia Gattuso (Memphis, Tenn.) and the other blocked by the Millsaps (0-1) defense. Four minutes later Ambrose got of both of her shots, only to see one go wide and the other saved by Kiara Henry.
A breakaway opportunity in the 49
th minute proved to be the deciding factor in the game when Amber Taylor slipped behind the Millsaps defense and beat Gattuso to put the Eagles on the board. The Ozarks defense did the rest as it held Millsaps without a shot until the 86
th minute when Barron's attempt went wide.
Millsaps will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Huntingdon College at 10:00 a.m. on Harper Davis Field. The Tournament will conclude with Centenary (La.) College and Ozarks playing after the Millsaps/Huntingdon matchup.
