JACKSON, Miss. – MIllsaps volleyball could not handle the Birmingham Southern Panthers on Tuesday night. They lost their first SAA Conference match 3-0 (18-25, 11-25, 14-25).
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) did her thing defensively, she finished the match with 16 digs and was the only Major in double figures for that category.
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and
Morgan Authement (Lacombe, La.) both led Millsaps with five kills each. The offense totaled 20 kills for the match and was unable to get any momentum going.
Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) led the team with 12 assists.
Millsaps and BSC were tight in the first set with neither team able to pull away. The Majors got out to a 13-11 lead and looked to be in control. That was until the Panthers got a kill from Julia Denby, they used that to their advantage and ended up scoring the next ten out of 11 points to go up 21-14 and took the first set.
After two quick points from Millsaps to begin the second set, BSC answered back by going on a 5-0 run that forced Millsaps to take a timeout. The Panthers picked up where they left off and scored the next eight out of ten points to take a 13-4 lead. The Majors were unable to recover and found themselves down two sets to none.
Millsaps began the third set by quickly going down 7-0. After the Majors clawed their way back to only be down 17-14 in the middle of the set, BSC scored the final eight points to take the set and the match.
With the loss, the Majors fall to 3-5 on the season and 0-1 in SAA play. They will look to rebound on Saturday in another SAA contest against Berry at the Hangar Dome at 12:00 p.m.
