JACKSON, Miss. – Two tightly contested matches saw the Millsaps volleyball team split the final day of their own invitational tournament on Saturday. The Majors took the first match over LeTourneau 3-1 (25-23, 28-26, 23-25, 25-13). And fell to Dillard in the nightcap 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 15-25, 29-27).
Match 1:
Both teams traded points during the first three sets. In the first, LeTourneau broke out to a 5-1 lead early on. When senior libero
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) began serving for Millsaps, the team calmed down and began to make a comeback.
The Majors tied the score at nine, but LETU answered back by scoring the next six out of seven points to take a 15-10 lead in the middle of the set. Down 17-12, Millsaps began their late comeback and tied the score at 23 before back-to-back kills by
Spencer Jones (Madison, Miss) and
Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala,) sealed the deal.
The second set went into extra points with Millsaps coming away with the win to force a decisive third set for LETU. The Yellow jackets hung on and forced a fourth set after taking control after the score was knotted at 21.
In the fourth set, MIllsaps dominated taking it 25-13. The closest LETU got to the Majors was when it was 9-7 early in the set. Millsaps then outscored the Yellow jackets 16-8 to close out the match and take the win.
Match 2:
The second match of the day for the Majors took extra points to decide a winner. Millsaps ended up falling short to Dillard in four sets. Neither team was able to break away from each other in the first set, both sides traded points until they were locked at 23 late in the set. Dillard took control and finished off the set by scoring the final two points, ending it with a kill.
Millsaps came right back with a commanding second set in which they won 25-15. The Majors got off to a 4-1 lead, after Dillard took a timeout, Millsaps picked up where they left off and rattled off the next 10 out of 11 points to take a 14-2 lead and did not look back.
Dillard reversed the script on Millsaps in the third set, taking it 25-15 to bring the match to the fourth set. In the fourth, MIllsaps let a 23-20 lead slip away and fought hard in extra points but ended up losing 29-27.
Zamjahn finished the match with 52 digs.
MIllsaps will be off until September 8th and will resume play in the Emory Classic. They will take on Chapman at 4:30 p.m. in Atlanta, Georgia in the Woodruff PE Center.
