Millsaps Beats Sewanee in Five, Sweeps Sunday

SEWANEE, Tenn. – It took the full five sets for Millsaps to defeat SAA opponent Sewanee on the Sunday (25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13). The Majors then had an easier time against Huntingdon, sweeping the Hawks (25-16, 25-20, 25-16).

Match 1:
Millsaps won their second SAA conference match over the Sewanee Tigers in a five set thriller. Three players cracked double figures in kills led by Payton Passantino (Plaquemine, La.) who finished with 13 kills and seven digs. Joining her was Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) who had 12 kills and Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) who finished with 11.

Senior Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.) stood out on the defensive end once again with 39 digs while Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La.) finished with 15. Shelby Marsh (Dallas, Texas) led the team with 24 assists and picked up nine digs and Gracie Bellnap (Kingwood, Texas) had 19 assists with nine digs.

The match initially looked like it was going to be a quick victory for the Majors when they took the first two sets. Things were even in the first up until the middle of the set. With the score tied at 11, Millsaps started to pull ahead by going on a 7-2 run to take an 18-13 lead. That would be enough to hold off the Tigers and take the first set.

Millsaps took that momentum right into the second set. With the teams tied at six, kills by Morgan Vincent (Lafayette, La.) and Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) sparked the Majors to outscore Sewanee 19-10 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Sewanee would not fold and took the next two hard fought sets back from Millsaps to tie the match and force a decisive fifth set.

The final set was even throughout, the teams treaded points until they were tied at 13. Millsaps took the lead with a kill by Petricko and ended it on a block assist by Vincent and Morgan Authement (Lacombe, La.).

Match 2:
Zamjahn finished with 13 digs making it the 13th consecutive match that she has reached double figures in the category. Marsh finished the match with 13 assists while Madelyn Pearce (Alabaster, Ala.) had nine assists. On the offensive side, Petricko led the Majors with six kills while Riddle had five kills and six digs.

MIllsaps began to take the lead over Huntingdon in the first set early. With the score tied at six, the Majors scored the next six points and closed out the set by outscoring the Hawks 19-10.

The second was much closer, Millsaps fell behind 18-15 late in the set. The Majors then went on a 7-0 run and scored the final two points on kills by Spencer Jones (Madison, Miss.) and Riddle.

Millsaps completed the sweep by taking control in the middle of the third set. After the score was tied at 13, the Majors went on a 12-3 run to take the match and the day.

With the two wins, Millsaps pulls back to .500 and is now 7-7 on the season and 2-3 in SAA play. The Majors are back in action on Tuesday in Jackson, but will play a road game at Belhaven at 7:00 p.m.
