ATLANTA, Ga. – Volleyball broke their two-match losing streak with a five set thriller over DeSales 3-2 (15-25, 16-25, 25-18, 27-25, 15-11). They then fell to #5 ranked Emory in three sets (25-16, 25-14, 25-16).
Match 1:
It took the full five sets along with extra points in the fourth set for Millsaps to complete a thrilling comeback victory over DeSales University.
Payton Passantino (Plaquemine, La.) had a big time match finishing with 12 kills and 17 digs and
Regan Riddle (Montgomery, Ala.) was also in double figures with a team leading 13 kills.
Erica Bennett (Slidell, La.) had nine kills and
Mckenzi Petricko (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished with eight.
Millsaps was all over the floor on defense. To go along with Passantino,
Ashley Zamjahn (Harahan, La.), who was named to the all-tournament team, led the team with 19 digs while
Presley Stoltzfus (Baton Rouge, La.) had 16,
Shelby Marsh finished with 12 digs and 20 assists and
Gracie Bellnap (Kingwood, Texas) was also in double figures with ten digs and a team leading 23 assists.
DeSales came out of the gates with a full head of steam and took the first two sets easily over the Majors by scores of 25-15 and 25-16.
With their backs against the wall and no room for error, Millsaps began their comeback in the third set. The Majors started the set strong getting out to a 12-6 lead, highlighted by three aces by Riddle and held on to take their first set.
The fourth set took extra points. With both teams tied at 25, the Majors picked up the final two points with a kill by Passantino and an ace from Stoltzfus to force the decisive fifth set.
Millsaps got off to a hot start in the fifth, going ahead 6-3, but DeSales came back to tie it at ten. The Majors then scored the final five out of six points ending it will back-to-back kills by Bennett to take the match.
Match 2:
Emory came into the match ranked #5 in the country and proved why they are there. Millsaps had some positive moments, Petricko finished with a team leading eight kills offensively. On defense, Zamjahn led the way with 14 digs while Passantino had eight.
Millsaps had the first set tied at six before the Eagles took control. Emory scored the next seven points to pull ahead and eventually take it 25-16.
The second set was much of the same, the Majors stayed with Emory and were tied at nine. Then the Eagles scored the next 11 out of 12 points. Emory took the third set 25-16 to secure the match.
With the split, the Majors record is now 3-4. They return home to the Hangar Dome for their first conference match against Birmingham Southern on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
