Women’s Hoops Drops Home Contest to Rhodes

JACKSON, Miss. – Five players scored in double figures for Rhodes to push the Lynx over Millsaps Friday night, 72-59 at the Hangar Dome. Millsaps falls to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in the SAA, while Rhodes improves to 10-4 and 3-1 in conference.

Freshman Dia Fortenberry posted her third double-double of the season with 16 points, ten rebounds and three steals. Junior Braxton Thomas was the only other Major in double figures with 11 points to go along three steals and two blocks, while sophomore Anna Wilson finished with eight points, three rebounds, three steals and a block.

Millsaps kept it close in the opening minutes of the game, two straight baskets by Kasi Matthews put the Majors behind 11-8 with 3:48 to go in the first. Rhodes then went on an 11-4 run to close the quarter capped off by a three at the buzzer to make it 22-12 at the end of one.

A 7-2 run pulled the Majors to within five points when Brazia Jones hit a three with 6:52 left in the second to make it a 24-19 deficit. Rhodes answered with a three of their own to go back up by eight and both teams traded baskets to close out the first half, making it a 35-28 Rhodes lead at the break.

The Majors started the second half on another run, this time 7-3 to make it a 38-35 game with 7:34 to go in the third. Wilson kept it at a three point deficit when her layup connected midway through the quarter to make it a 42-39 Lynx lead. Rhodes then ended the third quarter on a 16-3 run to take a 58-42 lead into the fourth.

Millsaps made a push late in the game when Megan Donaldson knocked down a three, Morgan McCrea got a basket off an offensive rebound and Fortenberry made a layup to make it a 69-58 deficit with 1:16 to go. But it was not enough as Rhodes made their free throws in the final minute to put the game away.

Millsaps is back in action on Sunday when they take on Hendrix at 1:00 p.m. in the Hangar Dome.
