JACKSON, Miss. – Junior
Michael Sullivan led the way with 16 points, but Oglethrope closed the game on a 10-0 run to stave off the Majors upset bid on Friday night. Millsaps falls to 4-13 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Stormy Petrels improve to 12-5 overall, and maintain their lead in the SAA standings with a 6-0 conference mark.
Sophomores
She'Chem Grant and
Saxton Becker each added eight points to lead a Millsaps offensive attack that received production from eight different players. Freshman
Kalvin Spikes tied a career high with 10 rebounds, and also recorded 3 blocked shots to lead the Majors defense.
After the teams traded baskets to start things off Oglethrope was able to establish an 18-6 lead in the early going. Grant supplied the spark the Majors needed to close the gap. His back-to-back three pointers cut the lead down to 18-12 with just under twelve minutes to play. After the Stormy Petrels answered to make it 26-14, Millsaps went on a 12-1 run, and captured a 28-27 lead on a Sullivan layup late in the first half. An Oglethorpe layup, and two Sullivan free throws gave the Majors a 30-29 lead at the halftime break.
The second twenty minutes were tightly contested, as neither team was able to really put the other away. Millsaps grabbed their largest lead of the ballgame at 55-51 when freshman
Joshua Miller converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:24 left in the contest. From that point on Oglethorpe scored 12 of the final 13 points to escape the Hangar Dome with the 63-56 win.
The Majors are back in action at the Hangar Dome on Sunday for another SAA contest as they take on Berry at 3:00 p.m.
