Men’s Basketball Tripped up by Berry at Home

JACKSON, Miss. – Freshman Joshua Miller poured in a team-high 19 points, but Berry received double-digit point contributions from four players to come away with a 90-79 win at the Hangar Dome on Sunday afternoon. Millsaps falls to 4-14 overall and 1-6 in the conference. The Vikings improve to 6-12 overall and 1-6 inside the SAA.

Sophomore Saxton Becker and junior Michael Sullivan joined Miller in double-digits with 12 and 11 points respectively to lead a Majors offensive attack that received production from eleven different players in the scoring column. Millsaps fell just short of their season-high in free throw percentage as the Majors converted on 21 of their 26 attempts from the charity stripe.

Berry opened up the contest on a 7-0 run before a layup from freshman Kalvin Spikes put Millsaps on the board. After the Vikings went ahead 14-4 the Majors responded with a 10-2 run, which included a pair of three-pointers from Becker, and baskets from freshman Matt Owens and sophomore She'Chem Grant to get right back into it. The teams went back in forth in the first twenty minutes before Berry closed out the half strong, and took a 40-34 lead to the halftime break.

The second half started out all Vikings at Berry stretched their lead to as many as 16 points with less than six minutes to play. The Majors dug in however, and fought back with a 13-2 run that was ignited by a three-point play from Miller, and four successful free throws from freshman Josh Leonce. Millsaps cut the deficit to 77-72 with 1:53 to play in the ballgame, but the Vikings were able to convert on their final eight free throw attempts to pull out the 90-79 win.

Next up, the Majors hit the road this weekend for a pair of SAA contests. They will be at Oglethorpe on Friday night and face a rematch with Berry on Sunday afternoon.
