JACKSON, Miss. – Playing against the number one seed in the conference, the Millsaps women's basketball team fell to Oglethorpe, 65-56 Friday night at the Hangar Dome. Millsaps drops to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the SAA, while Oglethorpe improves to 12-5 and 5-1 in the conference.
Freshman
Dia Fortenberry was the only Major in double figures, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals. Sophomore
Megan Donaldson came off the bench to score nine points and junior
Braxton Thomas and sophomore
Millicent Butler each finished the night with seven points and six rebounds.
Neither side was able to break away during the first five minutes of the first. With Millsaps on top 6-5 with 4:33 to go, Donaldson knocked down her first three to give the Majors a four-point lead. Oglethorpe answered with a three pointer moments later, but Donaldson hit another from beyond the arc to give the Majors a 12-8 lead with 3:10 left in the first. Millsaps hung on to a 13-10 over the last two minutes of the quarter.
Millsaps started the second on a small 8-4 run highlighted by two threes from Butler and
Taelor Manning to take a 21-15 advantage with 7:18 until the half. The Stormy Petrels then cut it to a one-point game, but back-to-back threes by
Caroline Guilbeau and
Kasi Matthews extended the lead to 27-20. Oglethrope closed out the half on an 8-0 run to take a 28-27 lead at the break.
Fortenberry set the tone early in the third with a steal and an and-one. The Majors carried that momentum to a 12-3 run to take a 39-31 lead with 4:47 left in the quarter. The second half of the third was favored toward Oglethorpe, the Stormy Petrels used a 12-4 run to tie the game at 43 heading into the fourth.
Oglethorpe took advantage in the fourth quarter, jumping out to a 53-46 lead with 6:03 to go in the game. Millsaps got back into it with an 8-2 run, making it a 55-54 deficit with 3:53 on the clock. But Oglethorpe closed the game on an 11-2 run, using a late three and converting their free throws to put the game away.
Millsaps is back in action on Sunday as they take on Berry at the Hangar Dome at 1:00 p.m.
