ATLANTA, Ga. – Two Oglethorpe free throws with one second left in the game hurdled the Stormy Petrels past Millsaps, 60-59 Friday night in Atlanta. Millsaps drops to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in the SAA, while Oglethorpe stays atop the conference with a 7-1 record and improves to 14-5 on the season.
Sophomore
Anna Wilson led all players with 20 points on 8-11 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior
Braxton Thomas finished with a 15 point, ten rebound double-double and freshman
Dia Fortenberry came away with eight points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Wilson scored the first eight points for the Majors as the teams battled in the beginning to an 8-8 start over the first seven minutes of play. Millsaps then created a cushion in the final three minutes of the first. The Majors closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run beginning and ending with threes by
Rebecca Harris and Thomas to take an 18-11 lead at the end of one.
Oglethorpe quickly came back into the game in the second. The Stormy Petrels outscored the Majors 13-8 to close the score to 26-24 with 4:14 left in the quarter. Millsaps then went on a quick 6-2 to go back ahead by six, but Oglethorpe hit a three at the halftime buzzer to bring the Millsaps lead down to 32-29 at the break.
In an evenly matched third quarter, Millsaps maintained their slim lead, Oglethorpe cut their deficit to one point on four separate occasions before finally taking a 44-43 lead with 2:29 to go. The Majors quickly took the lead back with free throws from Thomas and two baskets by Wilson to take a 49-45 lead at the end of three.
Millsaps held on to an eight-point lead with five minutes left to play. That was when Oglethorpe went on a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead with 3:11 to go. Both sides then traded baskets, and Millsaps found themselves on top by one with eight seconds left. Oglethorpe's Sydney Long was fouled on her last second three-point attempt and hit 2-3 from the line giving the Stormy Petrels the 60-59 win.
Millsaps stays in Georgia for its next game against Berry College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CST.
