Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Majors Down Sewanee For First SAA Victory

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps women's basketball team picked up its first win of the New Year, 64-51 at Sewanee Friday night. Snapping their six game losing streak, the Majors improve to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in SAA play. Sewanee drops to 4-7 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.

Sophomore Megan Donaldson came off the bench to lead the Majors with 14 points on 5-6 shooting and 4-5 from beyond the arc. This marks the third consecutive game where Donaldson has scored in double figures. Junior Braxton Thomas and freshman Dia Fortenberry both came away with nine points and six rebounds. Sophomore Caroline Guilbeau returned from injury and finished with seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

Millsaps jumped out to a quick lead to start the game, Thomas knocked down a three followed by baskets from Anna Wilson and Fortenberry, Thomas capped it off with a layup to make it a 10-4 lead with 5:11 left in the quarter. Sewanee was able to find the basket to close the gap, but Donaldson's jumper and three-pointer moments later brought it back to a 15-9 lead with 3:33 to go. Guilbeau's basket in the closing seconds made it 21-16 to finish the first.

Neither side could generate much offense in the second. Sewanee cut the Majors lead to one when they began the quarter with back-to-back baskets. Fortenberry then made a layup and Donaldson's three with 7:24 to go brought it back to a 26-20 lead. Millsaps would only hit one free throw for the rest of the quarter and Sewanee made two baskets to make it 27-23 Majors at halftime.

Sewanee opened the third with a basket, cutting the Millsaps lead to two points. But the Majors built a slim margin, outscoring the Tigers 12-7 over the rest of the quarter to take a 40-32 lead heading into the fourth.

The Tigers hung around until Taelor Manning's three with 8:35 left in the game sparked a 10-1 run that extended the Majors lead to 52-37 with 4:52 to go. Sewanee hit consecutive three's but it was not enough as the Majors converted their free throws in final minutes of the game to secure the win.

Millsaps is on the road next in Danville, Kentucky to take on Centre for a 1:00 p.m. ET start. It is the final road game before the Majors return to the Hangar Dome for four straight home games.
