Millsaps Tripped Up at Centre, 89-72

DANVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Dia Fortenberry scored 29 points, shooting 17-21 from the free throw line to go along with six rebounds, three steals and a block in the Majors 89-72 loss at Centre Sunday afternoon. Freshman Taelor Manning was also in double figures with 11 points and junior Braxton Thomas finished with seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Millsaps falls to 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the SAA, while Centre improves to 12-1 and 3-0 in conference.

After falling behind 8-4, Anna Wilson got a put back off an offensive rebound and Fortenberry made two at the line to tie the game. Fortenberry kept it going, scoring four straight but Centre put up nine points over that span to give the Colonels a 17-12 lead with 2:37 left. A quick 6-0 run gave the Majors an 18-17 lead with 1:06 left in the quarter, but Centre scored the final four points to take a 21-18 lead at the end of the first.

Manning and Fortenberry opened the second with baskets to put the Majors on top 22-21. But Centre pulled away, closing out the half on a 22-9 run, taking a 43-31 lead at the halftime break.

It wasn't until 4:30 left in the third when Manning made the first field goal of the quarter for either team with a three to cut it to a 45-36 deficit. Millsaps had trouble closing the margin for the rest of the quarter as both sides traded baskets, Centre took a 60-47 lead heading into the fourth. Manning scored nine of her 11 points in the quarter.

Centre led by as many as 17, taking a 67-50 lead with 7:14 left in the game. Millsaps began their comeback effort when Fortenberry made two layups, including an and-one. After a Centre layup, Thomas and Caroline Guilbeau knocked down back-to-back threes to make it an eight-point game (69-61) with 4:14 to go. Centre then put the game away, closing out the final minutes on a 20-11 run.

Millsaps returns to the Hangar Dome for the first time in nearly a month. The Majors take on conference rival Rhodes on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
