BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—When you're facing a team that's on a roll, sometimes you just need the chips to fall in your favor.
The Millsaps volleyball team came into Wednesday's road SAA matchup against a Birmingham-Southern team that was riding a 9-win streak. And if the cards had played just a bit different in the first game, it could have been the Majors that ended the Panthers win streak. But, in the end, Millsaps fell just short of picking up a huge road win as they fell to BSC, 3-0.
In the first game, anytime BSC would pull ahead, the Majors would storm back. Late in the game, with the Panthers up 24-21 and serving for the set, Millsaps was able to force four straight BSC errors and pull ahead 25-24, forcing a BSC timeout. Unfortunately, out of the timeout, the Panthers reeled off three consecutive points to take game 1, 27-25.
Game 2 started out much the same, with the two teams trading points back and forth. But with the score favoring BSC at 11-10, the Panthers finished out the set on a 14-5 run to take the game and put the Majors in a 2-0 hole.
The two teams swapped points in the third until an
Erica Bennett kill put the Majors ahead early, 5-4. The Panthers then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, which wouldn't be relinquished. Millsaps was able to pull within 5, at 12-7, but the Panthers proved to be too much as they took game 3, 25-16, and the match.
The Majors were led by Bennett's 14 kills and 7 digs while
McKenzi Petricko chipped in 8 kills and 4 digs.
Morgan Vincent had 5 kills and 4 blocks for the Majors who dropped to 7-14 overall and 2-10 in the SAA.
