Volleyball Drops Tough Match To Nationally Ranked Berry

JACKSON, Miss.—There's no such thing as a moral victory.

However, when you're facing the 16th ranked team in the country, you have to look for positives.

So despite the 3-0 loss to Berry College Friday night, the Majors have a lot of positives to take away from the match.

The first game didn't start out well for Millsaps, as they fell behind early and had to play catch up the whole game. Trailing 21-12, the Majors used kills from McKenzi Petricko and Morgan Vincent to pull within 7. But that would be as close as they got as Berry took game 1, 25-17.

Berry got out to a 7-4 lead to start the second game, but that's when Millsaps kicked it into gear. They used a 5-0 run, highlighted by two Erica Bennett aces, to pull ahead and force the Vikings to play from behind, something they're not familiar with this season. A 3-0 run later in the set extended the Major lead to 15-10 and forced a Berry timeout. Millsaps scored 2 of the next three points to take a 17-11 lead, but Berry's firepower was too much as they went on a 10-2 run to pull back ahead. Millsaps would only be able to tack on two more points as Berry put the second set away, 25-21.

Game 3 started in the Majors favor as well as they went on a 6-0 run early to take an 11-8 lead. The two teams traded points back and forth until the set was tied at 18. Unfortunately for the Majors, Berry scored 7 of the next 9 points to take the game 3, 25-20.

Offensively, Millsaps was led by Bennett who had 9 kills to go along with her pair of aces. Petricko's 8 digs was up next while Carly Trimarche led the way with 13 assists. Payton Passantino led the defense with 18 digs.

The loss puts the Majors at 7-15 overall and 2-11 in the SAA.

What's Next?

Millsaps will wrap up SAA play on Saturday as they welcome Oglethorpe to the Hangar Dome for a noon contest. It's senior day, so the Majors will be celebrating seniors Gracie Bellnap and Kayleigh Aicklen.
