JACKSON, Miss.—Coming off a competitive loss to nationally ranked Berry, it would have been easy for the Millsaps volleyball team to have a letdown Saturday against Oglethorpe. But after a slow start, the Majors kicked it in gear and took down the Stormy Petrels 3-1 in Millsaps' SAA finale, as well as senior day, at the Hangar Dome.
How It Happened
Set 1 didn't go in the Majors favor, as they fell behind early and were never able to catch up to OU. A 3-0 run late in the set brought Millsaps within 2 at 18-16, but Oglethorpe scored 7 of the next 9 points to take the set 25-18.
OU picked right back up in set 2 where it left off at the end of set 1, jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead and forcing a Millsaps timeout. Whatever head coach
Jaime Fisher said to the team in the timeout must have worked because the Majors came out swinging. After tying the match at 12, then falling behind 17-14, Millsaps went on a 8-1 run, highlighted by kills from
Noelle Coats,
Morgan Vincent and
McKenzi Petricko. OU brought the score within 1, but Millsaps put them away with 3 straight points from a Vincent kill and 2 OU errors to take the set, 25-20. \
The two teams were evenly matched in the third set. With the score tied at 11, Millsaps reeled off 6 of 7 points, thanks to kills from Vincent,
Gracie Bellnap and a pair from
Erica Bennett, to go ahead 17-12. The Stormy Petrels then went on a 9-1 run of their own, taking a 21-18 lead. But the Majors never-say-die attitude came out and, trailing 22-19, Millsaps went on a 5-0 run to go in front 24-22. OU was able to tie it up and force extra points and the two went back and forth until a pair of Bennett kills gave Millsaps the 28-26 win.
While set 4 started out even, a big 7-1 run by Millsaps gave them a 16-11 lead, from which OU wouldn't recover. A kill by
Carly Trimarche sealed the match for the Majors as they took game 4, 25-19.
Offensively, Millsaps was led by Bennett's match-high 21 kills. Vincent had a double-double, tallying 16 kills and 16 digs. Bellnap's 24 assists were a match-high.
The win takes the Majors to 8-15 overall and 3-11 in the SAA.
