JACKSON, Miss.—After ending the SAA slate with a win against Oglethorpe, the Millsaps volleyball team looked to keep the momentum going Tuesday against visiting Belhaven.
After more than 2 hours and many back and forth sets, the Majors ended their 2018 home slate with an exciting 3-2 win over the Blazers.
How It Happened
Set 1
In the first set, neither team could pull ahead, with each team trading points back and forth. With Millsaps ahead 22-19, the Blazers used a 4-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. Millsaps tied it at 23, then a service error allowed Belhaven to serve for the set. A
Morgan Vincent kill knotted the set at 24 but Belhaven answered with back-to-back points to take set 1, 26-24.
Set 2
The Majors showed no signs of their set 1 loss, as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead and forced an early Belhaven timeout. Midway through the set, the Blazers were able to pull within 8, at 16-8, but
Payton Passantino reeled off 7 straight service points, including 2 aces, to put the match away as the Majors took set 2, 25-9.
Set 3
The two teams were right back to their back-and-forth point-for-point game in set 3. Late in the set, after a
McKenzi Petricko kill put Millsaps ahead 18-17, Belhaven went on a 6-1 run to pull ahead for good. An
Erica Bennett kill would bring the score to 24-20, but a Blazer kill put the Majors away, 25-20.
Set 4
Millsaps made sure there would be a set 5 by staying calm and not trying to do too much in set 4. While the teams were very evenly matched, the Majors used the home atmosphere to gain momentum. After a Blazer point late in the set made it 22-19, Millsaps, the Majors took advantage of 2 errors and Petricko kill to force a decisive fifth set.
Set 5
Millsaps put Belhaven away early in the final set, getting out to a 6-1 lead highlighted by 3 kills from Petricko and one from Vincent. The Blazers put up a rally at the end, pulling within 2 at 13-11, but a Vincent kill and Passantino's 5
thace of the night secured the win for the Majors.
Offensively, the Majors were led by Vincent's match-high 17 kills, to go along with her 7 blocks. Bennett had 16 kills as well as 6 blocks and a pair of aces.
Gracie Bellnap led the charge with a season-high 34 assists while Passantino's 30 digs was tops for Millsaps. For the match, the Majors also produced a season-high 13 blocks.
The win takes the Majors to 9-15 overall.
What's Next?
Millsaps will wrap up their 2018 regular season as they travel to New Orleans for a Saturday matchup against Loyola University-New Orleans. The match starts at 1pm.
