MEMPHIS, Tenn.—It's been right there for the Millsaps volleyball team. Like a word you can't remember that's on the tip of your tongue, a single point here or there has thwarted the Majors in multiple matches this season.
But as they took the court against Rhodes on Saturday, Millsaps was bound and determined to remember that word, and that word was win. The Majors, trailing 2 games to 1, never gave up and are leaving Memphis with a 3-2 victory over the Lynx in a match that took more than 2 hours to complete.
How it Happened
In the first game, the Majors got down early, falling behind 22-14 before doing on a 5-0 run and forcing a Rhodes timeout. The two teams were tied at 23 but a pair of Lynx kills gave Rhodes the first set, 25-23.
Millsaps jumped out big in the second set, 16-7, as kills by
Morgan Vincent,
Erica Bennett,
Alyssa Jolly and
McKenzi Petricko, along with a pair of aces by
Kayleigh Aicklen, gave the Majors the momentum and, eventually, the game as Rhodes couldn't recover from the early deficit and fell 25-21.
Rhodes continued the trend of getting ahead quickly, as they took an 18-14 before a 4-1 Majors run, highlighted by kills from Jolly and Petricko, brought Millsaps within 1. The teams traded points back and forth, and with Rhodes ahead 24-20, Millsaps went on a small run but couldn't put the game away, falling 25-22.
In the fourth, the Majors took a lead, but watched it falter as the Lynx used a 7-0 run to pull ahead 17-14 and force a Millsaps timeout. Out of the timeout, Millsaps used a run of their own to pull ahead, thank to a
Katelyn Thomas ace and 3 Bennett kills. That took all the steam from Rhodes and allowed Millsaps to force fifth and final set.
In the final frame, the two teams continued their even pace of play, tying the score at 7 before 3 Lynx errors and a
Payton Passantino ace sealed the fate for Rhodes. The Lynx were able to pull within 1, at 13-12, but the Majors put it away with a kill from Petricko and a match-ending block from
Cailey Ness and Vincent.
With the win, the Majors improved to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the SAA. Rhodes fell to 10-8, 3-6 in the SAA.
Offensively, the Majors were led by Bennett who had a monster game, leading all players with 22 kills, followed by Petricko with 18 and Vincent with 12. Thomas's 29 assists were tops while defensively, Vincent (5) and Jolly (4), had 9 blocks between them. Passantino followed up her SAA-Defensive Player of the Week performance with another 32 digs.
What's Next?
The Majors will look to keep the momentum going as they head to Arkansas to take on Hendrix College on Sunday. The match starts at 12:00 pm.
