JACKSON, Miss. -- On Sunday afternoon, the Millsaps College women's soccer team took the pitch at Harper Davis Field for the final time in the 2018 regular season. The Majors played host to the Vikings of Berry College in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action.
Seniors:
Grayston Barron,
Sarah Rimmer and
Molly Swinney were honored pregame prior to the final home match of their Millsaps College careers.
It was a hard-fought match all afternoon long that required an overtime period. Less than four minutes into the first overtime, the visiting Vikings corralled a loose ball in the box and put it away for the golden goal in the 1-0 win.
How It Happened
The Majors offense actually looked like they had the first goal of the match. After a Berry foul in the 12th minute Millsaps was awarded a free kick. Freshman
Hannah Johnson appeared to have scored on the kick from Barron, but unfortunately the Majors were called for being offsides and the goal was taken off the scoreboard.
The Vikings dominated the shot column for the match by a 29-4 margin, but like has been the story all season long, the Millsaps defense held strong and kept Berry off of the scoreboard. In regulation, the Vikings had several excellent looks at goal, but each time
Alyssa McCarron was there to make the save.
When the horn sounded after 90 minutes of play the match was still tied at 0-0.
Berry finally broke through in the 94th minute for their first and only goal of the match which gave them the 1-0 win.
McCarron finished the game with 9 saves to bring her season total up to 74. Offensively,
Emily Gager, Barron and Rimmer all finished with a shot on goal for the Majors.
What's Next?
Milsaps will continue SAA play on the road this weekend as they travel to Centre on Friday night and Sewanee on Sunday afternoon.
