JACKSON, Miss. -- On Saturday, the Millsaps College Majors took the field for the final time in 2018. The Majors welcomed the Warriors of Hendrix College to Harper Davis Field for the last Southern Athletic Association (SAA) game of the season.
Millsaps led for the better part of 3 quarters, but a Hendrix TD early on in the 4th quarter forced the Majors to come-from-behind in their 28-21 win. Millsaps scored 14 points in less than 3 minutes to secure their fifth win of the year.
How It Happened
On the opening drive of the game the Millsaps offense used a good mix of run and pass to march down the field for a touchdown. The score came on 35-yard pass from senior
Chance Clowers to senior
Ty Durham, but it was set up by a 30-yard rush on 2nd down by senior
Andrew Warren.
Unfortunately, the Warriors answered right back to tie things up on a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
After back-to-back scores on the opening possessions for each team it looked like a high-scoring affair was on tap. The two defenses had other plans however. 8 drives were run in the 1st and 2nd quarter before anymore points were put on the scoreboard.
Late in the 2nd quarter the Warriors were driving inside Millsaps territory, but on a 1st down play Hendrix fumbled a bad snap that was recovered by
Reid Evans to give the ball back to the Majors.
On the ensuing drive, the Majors took over with less than 2 minutes remaining in the half. They drove 70 yards in just 5 plays for a touchdown to go up 14-7. The drive was capped off by a perfect 20-yard touchdown pass from
Amryn Jeffrey to
Brandon Stockerl.
Unfortunately, a Millsaps penalty on the PAT try forced the Majors to kickoff from their own 20-yard line. Hendrix returned the kick all the way into Majors' territory, and despite only having 24 seconds on the clock were able to get a 33-yard field goal as time expired to make it a 14-10 game at halftime.
The Warriors began the second half with the ball, and made another field goal on their first drive to cut the Millsaps lead down to 14-13 early on in the 3rd quarter.
The Majors offense sputtered somewhat in the 3rd quarter as they were forced to punt on their first three drives of the 2nd half.
Early on in the 4th quarter Hendrix took over possession with Millsaps leading 14-13. That would not hold for long however, as on 2nd down the Warriors broke off a 54-yard rush for a TD. They were good on the 2-point conversion, and with 13:20 left in the game the Majors found themselves trailing for the first time, 21-14.
Just two offensive later Millsaps tied things up. After a 1-yard completion on first down, Warren took a pitch from Jeffrey on 2nd down and found a lane down the sideline. 69 yards later Warren was in the endzone, and after a
Hunter Sellen PAT was good, the game was all tied up at 21-21.
On the ensuing Warrior drive it was the defensive seniors turn to make an impact. On the third play of the drive senior
Chandler Coleman forced a fumble that was recovered by senior
Steele Liles. Liles returned it deep inside Hendrix territory to give the offense perfect field position. It took just one play for Jeffrey to find Durham wide open across the middle for a 20-yard touchdown. Just like that Millsaps led 28-21 with 10:50 left to play in the game.
Hendrix would not go quietly however, they forced a Millsaps punt late in the quarter. The Warriors came all out on the rush and got home for the block. Hendrix recovered on the Millsaps 28-yard line.
In just a few plays the Warriors were down to the Millsaps 18-yard line. On 3rd down the Hendrix QB was flushed out of the pocket, he threw a pass in the direction of the endzone but senior
Malcolm Ben was there for the interception to seal the 28-21 win for the Majors.
Offensively, Clowers and Jeffrey combined to go 21-32 for 3 TDs and no interceptions. On the ground Warren racked up 150 yards rushing and 1 TD. Stockerl finished as the leading receiver with 84 yards and a touchdown, while Durham added 65 yards and a pair of TDs.
On the defensive side of the ball, Coleman finished with a season-high 12 tackles including 1.5 for loss. He also had the one forced fumble.
With today's win Millsaps ends the year at 5-5 overall. Of note, the offensive line finishes the year having only allowed 5 sacks on the season. That number currently is tied for fourth-best in all of NCAA Division III.
