JACKSON, Miss.—For the first three and a half quarters,
Anna Wilson was pretty quiet.
The 5-11 junior had just two points until the end of the fourth quarter but it was her late game heroics that people will be talking about. With Belhaven leading Millsaps 68-66 with just 22 seconds late in the game, Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed three and went up for the putback. She was fouled and sent to the line, where she drained both free throws to send the game to overtime. She then scored 9 of her 12 points in the extra period en route to an 83-72 Majors victory to open their 2018-19 season.
Millsaps had trouble finding an offensive rhythm in the first quarter, where at one point, they trailed 20-7 and 23-10. But Millsaps ended the first period on a 5-0 run, thanks to a
Morgan McCrea layup and a
Millicent Butler three.
Belhaven built their lead back up to 10 to start the second, but a a Wilson layup and a McCrea three brought the score within 5 at 27-22. Belhaven scored 11 of the next 15 points, however, to take a 38-26 lead into the half.
The Blazers got the scoring started in the third quarter but
Dia Fortenberry's layup and back-to-back threes from McCrea kept the Majors in the game. Belhaven extended their lead to 12 but you could tell the Majors were playing with more confidence and wouldn't let themselves get down too much. Millsaps was able to pull within 9 at 56-47 by the end of the third.
To start the fourth, Belhaven pulled ahead 60-49 but that lead vanished quickly as the Major defense clamped down and forced multiple Belhaven turnovers. Down 67-57, with less than just over 2 minutes left, the Majors made their comeback. Millsaps finished regulation on a 10-1 run, highlighted by a pair of
Megan Donaldson free throws, a
Taelor Manning steal and layup, another McCrea three, a pair of Fortenberry free throws and Wilson's free throws to send the game to OT.
The overtime period was all Millsaps as they used a Butler layup, a Wilson three and layup to pull ahead 76-70 and take all the wind out of the Blazer's sails. Belhaven was able to pull within 5 at 76-71, but a Fortenberry offensive rebound and putback sealed the deal and sent the Majors to their first win of the season.
The Majors were led by McCrea, who had a game-high 20 points, including 4 three-pointers, to go along with her 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Fortenberry had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Wilson had 8 rebounds to go along with her 12 points.
