CONWAY, Ark.—The name of the game for Millsaps Saturday was defense.
The Majors squared off with Austin College on the first day of SAA/SCAC Challenge. Millsaps was tasked with stopping Austin's preseason All-American Bryce Frank. But while the Majors did keep Frank to just 15 points, her teammates picked up the slack to help carry the Roos to a 77-59 win over Millsaps.
Millsaps was riding quite a bit of momentum coming into Saturday's contest, having knocked off rival Belhaven in overtime on Tuesday. In that game, the Majors overcame a 10-point deficit with less than 2 minutes to force the extra period before dominating OT. Saturday, however, Millsaps got down early and wasn't able to complete the comeback.
Trailing 20-16 near the end of the first quarter,
Megan Donaldson hit a three to bring the score within one heading into the second period.
Millsaps took a 23-21 lead on a
Dia Fortenberry layup to start the second quarter but the Roos scored 6 straight to regain control. With AC leading 38-27, Millsaps reeled off 6 straight themselves, highlighted by
Morgan McCrea three and a layup and foul by Fortenberry, to make the halftime score 38-33 AC.
The second half was all Austin, as the Roos outscored Millsaps 39-26 and shot a blistering 50% from behind the arc. The Majors, however, couldn't get any offensive rhythm going, shooting just 8-21 from the field in the second half.
Offensively, Millsaps was led by Donaldson's 12 points, all of which were scored in the first half.
Anna Wilson was the only other Millsaps player in double figures, chipping in 10 points and 4 rebounds.
