Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Opens SAA/SCAC Challenge with 96-74 Win over Austin College

CONWAY, Ark. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team traveled to Arkansas on Saturday for the first game of the SAA/SCAC Challenge hosted by Hendrix College. In their first game of the challenge the Majors took on the 'Roos of Austin College.

Millsaps led 45-40 at halftime, and outscored Austin 51-34 in the second half as they cruised to a 96-74 win. 18 different players got into the game for the Majors, with 14 players appearing in the scoring column.

How It Happened
The Majors scored the opening points of the contest on a layup by Michael Sullivan, but it was Austin College who led 9-5 at the game's first media timeout.

Coming out of the break Saxton Becker made good on three free throws, and less than two minutes later Millsaps took a 12-11 lead on a free throw by She'Chem Grant.

The two teams traded baskets back and forth for the better part of the half, but when the final media timeout came Austin held a 36-31 advantage.

From that point on, the Majors closed the half on a 14-4 run to take a 45-40 lead to the halftime locker room. Sullivan really came alive on the offensive end down the stretch as he scored 9 of the team's 14 points during the run.

Millsaps opened up the second half with a three pointer from James Turner, and less than three minutes into it had stretched their lead to double-digits on a layup from Joshua Miller

The 'Roos never got the lead below 6 in final twenty minutes of play as the Majors were able to empty the bench in the closing minutes and cruise to their second win of the season.

Becker led all scorers with 14 points, including 3-6 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Sullivan and Justin Van Pelt joined Becker in double-digits with 11 and 10 points respectively. Van Pelt just missed out on a double-double as he pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds.

The Majors finished 26-31 from the free throw line, and out-rebounded Austin by a 51-34 mark in the winning effort.

What's Next?
The Majors return to Grove Gymnasium tomorrow for the second day of the SAA/SCAC Challenge. Millsaps will face off with Centenary College in a game scheduled to tip-off at 3:00pm.
