ATLANTA, Ga.—A week after upsetting the #2 seeded Rhodes in the SAA quarterfinals, the Millsaps men's soccer team was looking to ride that momentum to another upset, this time of #3 Centre.
Unfortunately for the Majors, Centre wasn't willing to be another step in a Millsaps run, as they downed the Majors 3-0 on the campus of Oglethorpe University.
How It Happened
Unlike last weekend, when Millsaps scored first and was able to ride their defense to a shutout win over Rhodes, the Majors struggled to find offense. The Colonels got on the board in the 6
th minute Jacob Haddad took a pass from Alex Garuba and put it past goalkeeper
Alfie Miller to give Centre an early 1-0 lead.
Garuba, who leads the SAA in goals, wasn't finished with points for the day. Just 6 minutes later, after getting fouled in the box, he put a penalty kick past a diving Miller to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.
The Majors defense would keep Centre off the board for the next 74 minutes before Garuba added his second goal of the day in the 86
th minute and put the match away at 3-0.
Offensively, the Majors were only able to muster 8 shots, just 2 of which were on goal and both came from last week's offensive hero,
Luca Kistner.
Miller made 4 saves in the match.
The loss to Centre is the third straight year the Colonels have end the Majors season, including two straight in the SAA semifinals. The Majors end the season at 4-13-1.
What The Coach Said
"We definitely fought hard today," head coach
Steve Voltz said. "We had a great effort but Centre played more clever in front of the goal and took advantage of opportunities. I want to thank the seniors for their hard work and dedication to this team. I'm proud of the way this team fought today."
