Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Cruises to 70-49 Win over Howard Payne

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team returned home Saturday evening as they welcomed Howard Payne University to the Hangar Dome for a non-conference game.

The Majors received scoring contributions from 13 different players, and led by as many as 28 points, en route to their fourth win of the season.

How It Happened
After the visiting Yellow Jackets scored first on a layup, the Millsaps offense got back-to-back three pointers from Michael Sullivan and Newlon Gillihan to take the lead. The Majors would never trail again.

Powered by some hot shooting from behind the three-point arc, the Majors errupted for 27 points before HPU ever scored double-digits. Sullivan, Saxton Becker, She'Chem Grant and Ryan McLaurin all had three pointers in the run.

It seemed like everyone who touched the ball for Millsaps in the first half scored. Justin Van Pelt got in on the offensive action with a dunk off of a nice pass from Cameron Carvelli to put the Majors up 33-12, and just one possession later Daniel Coleman buried a three off of another Carvelli assist to stretch the Majors' lead out to 36-14.

All told, Millsaps was 10-18 from three-point territory in the first twenty minutes which helped them take a 44-24 lead to the halftime locker room.

The Majors began the second half on a 7-0 run which quickly made the Yellow Jacket comeback hopes slim to none. The second half was closer in scoring, with the Majors holding just a 26-25 advantage, but the hot start allowed many of the starters to get much needed rest with Millsaps facing a quick turnaround tomorrow.

20 different players saw minutes for Millsaps with 13 of those players making their way into the scoring column.

Key Contributors
Sullivan led all scorers with 14 points in the winning effort. The rest of the scoring was very well-balanced for Head Coach Jimmy Smith's squad. James Turner finished as the leading rebounder with 7, while Carvelli and McLaurin each had 3 assists for Millsaps.

What's Next?
The Majors are right back in action tomorrow evening as they host the Crusaders of the University of Dallas. Tip-off from the Hangar Dome is scheduled for 5:00pm.
