JACKSON, Miss.—A lot of coaches will tell you that a game can't be won in the first half.
But for the Millsaps women's basketball team, that's exactly what happened Tuesday night against visiting Centenary. The Majors took a 42-19 halftime lead, then held on for a 61-47 that ended up a lot closer than the score indicated.
How It Happened
9 days after beating Centenary by 19 in the SAA/SCAC Challenge, the Majors started the game like the last one finished…with Millsaps pulling ahead quickly.
In the first quarter, with the score just 5-4 Millsaps, the Majors went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a jumper and three from
Morgan McCrea, a pair of
Millicent Butler free throws and back-to-back baskets by
Kasi Matthews. Centenary hit a three to stop the run, but would only score one more point in the quarter as Millsaps went on another run, this time 5-1, to take a 21-8 lead.
The second started with Centenary pulling within 7 at 21-14, but
Anna Thigpen put in a layup down low from a Butler steal, to build the Majors lead back to 9. With Millsaps leading 23-14, the Majors ended the quarter on a 19-5 run, with 5 different players scoring during that span.
In the second half, the Majors high powered offense cooled down, as they were able to score just 19 points across the two quarters. But by then, the hole was too deep for Centenary to climb out of, as Millsaps pulled away for their second straight double-digit win.
Offensively, the Majors were led by McCrea's game-high 13 points to go along with her 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Butler and
Anna Wilson, who had scored in double-digits in each of the Majors first 6 games, added 9 points apiece.
Stats of the Game
-Once again, size down low proved to be a big factor for Millsaps as they outscored Centenary 28-20 in the paint and outscored them 15-8 in second chance points. The Majors had 15 offensive rebounds. For the game, the Majors outrebounded Centenary, 46-30.
-The Millsaps defense held the Ladies to just 30% shooting on the night, including just 3-15 from the field in the first half.
What's Next?
The Majors will hit the road and head to Texas this weekend. They'll face off against 19
thranked Austin College on Saturday at 6 pm before heading to Irving, Texas to square off with UDallas on Sunday. Tipoff for that game is 4 pm.
