Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Completes the Season Sweep of Austin College with 90-67 Win

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Millsaps College men's basketball team traveled to take on the 'Roos of Austin College on Friday night. It was the second meeting this season between the two schools.

The Majors were up 42-37 at halftime, and led by 14 second half points from Ryan McLaurin, were able to pull away from the 'Roos in the final twenty minutes to pick up a 90-67 win and complete the season sweep of Austin College.

How It Happened
Austin started off the game strong as they were looking to avenge a previous loss to Millsaps back from back in mid-November in the SAA/SCAC Challenge.

Some hot shooting from three-point territory allowed the 'Roos to hold a 17-4 lead less than 6 minutes into the game. Fortunately for the Majors, the Millsaps defense dug their heels in, and offensively they outscored Austin 38-20 over the final 14 minutes of the half to take a 42-37 lead to the locker room.

It was the second wave that actually sparked the run for Millsaps. A pair of three-pointers from Saxton Becker and Drew Burnett, combined with a layup from Kalvin Spikes quickly had the Austin lead cut down to 18-12.

Later in the half the Majors took their first lead of the game on a three from freshman Newlon Gillihan to make it 29-27. Millsaps would never trail again in the ballgame.

The early portion of the second half was back and forth, but once Millsaps grabbed a double-digit lead on a pair of McLaurin free throws with just over 9 minutes to play, it was all Majors down the stretch.

Millsaps had their largest lead of the game on a three pointer from McLaurin to make it 85-62 with 2:31 remaining, and when it was all said it done, the Majors hit the 90 point mark for the third time this season in the victory.

Key Contributors
Becker led all Millsaps scorers with 14 points, including shooting 4-7 from three point range. Justin Van Pelt was the only starter to score in double-digits as he had 10 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 1 steal. 18 different players saw minutes for the Majors, with 14 of those cracking the scoring column.

McLaurin, Cameron Carvelli and Matt Owens all had 6 rebounds a piece to finish in a tie for the team lead.

What's Next?
Millsaps now sits at 7-0 overall this season. The Majors are right back in action tomorrow night when they take on the University of Dallas Crusaders. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
