JACKSON, Miss. – After a one-point loss at top seeded Oglethorpe and a win at Berry last weekend, the Millsaps women's basketball team moved up in the SAA standings to fifth place with a chance to move even higher this weekend. The Majors welcome Sewanee on Friday and Centre on Sunday to the Hangar Dome for big games down the stretch.
Dia Fortenberry has been the leading scorer for the Majors all year; she is fourth in the SAA in scoring with 14.4 points per game. The freshman also pulls down 6.6 rebounds per game and is second in the conference with 2.3 steals per game.
Millsaps comes into the weekend ranked in the top three of the conference in a number of categories. Including second in blocked shots with 4.4 per game, second in steals per game with 9.6 and third in rebounding, averaging 40.6 rebounds per game.
Sewanee comes into Friday having lost three out of their last four games, with the lone victory a big one over third seeded Rhodes. The Tigers boast the top two scorers in the SAA in junior Bella Taylor (21.2 ppg) and senior Hannah McCormack (17.3 ppg), Taylor is also second in assists per game (3.6 apg) and first in steals (2.6 spg). Millsaps defeated Sewanee on the road, 64-51 in the first meeting on January 5th.
Centre and Millsaps begin the weekend with identical 4-5 records in conference play, but the Colonels 89-72 win over the Majors back on January 7th has them one spot ahead in the standings. Centre is led by sophomore Kat Wilson whoa averages 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. The Colonels have lost their last five out of six games coming into the weekend.
Friday night's game against Sewanee is set for a 6:00pm tip-off, and Sunday's contest with Centre will begin at 12:00pm.
