Millsaps Baseball Wins Home Opener 2-1 over Piedmont

JACKSON, Miss. – The 2018 home opener for the Millsaps College baseball team was relocated across town to Smith-Wills Stadium due to all of the rain this past weekend. The change in location did not affect the Majors as they were able to pick up their first win of the season, 2-1 over visiting Piedmont College.

After the first inning saw both teams load the bases, but fail to capitalize on their opportunities the Majors broke through in the 2nd inning.

Freshman Christian Cooper reached on an error to start things off. After a strikeout, seniors Patrick Grumbley and Andy Page followed things up with a pair of singles to load the bases. Junior Brennan Ducote drew a walk that allowed Cooper to score the first run of the ballgame.

From that point the game settled into somewhat of a pitcher's duel.

Redshirt-sophomore Barret Kaul got the start for Millsaps on the mound, and he turned in an outstanding performance to pick up his first win of the season. His final line was 5 innings pitched, one hit allowed, no runs and four strikeouts. Senior John Wiltshire was the only one called on from the bullpen, as he worked four innings to pick up the save. He allowed the one run, but struck out six Lion batters.

The Majors scored their second run in the bottom of the 6th inning when Ducote stole third base, and then scored on a throwing error by the Piedmont catcher.

The lone run for the Lions came in the 8th inning when a ball appeared to sneak just inside the first-base line and get all the way to the corner allowing Justin Groover to score from first base.

With tonight's win Millsaps improves to 1-2 on the year. The two teams will wrap up their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at Twenty Field on the campus of Millsaps College. First pitch is set for 2:00pm.
