Majors Grab 5-4 Walk-off Win Against Piedmont

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College baseball team trailed visiting Piedmont College for nearly the entire game Monday afternoon, but the Majors came through when it mattered however, as freshman Christian Cooper gave Millsaps the 5-4 win on a walk-off single. This win evens up the Majors record at 2-2 on the young season. Piedmont falls to 1-3 overall.

The Lions scored a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd to grab an early 2-0 lead. After Millsaps responded with a sacrifice fly from junior Connor Woodall to make it 2-1, Piedmont really opened things up in the middle innings.

In the top of the 5th they got an unearned run, and in the top of the 7th they scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

The Majors dug in and answered in the bottom half of the 7th inning. Junior Brennan Ducote singled to lead off the inning, and Woodall followed it up with a walk. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, senior Chase Callaway laced a single to left center to score Ducote. Piedmont went to the bullpen, but the changed did not bother senior Wes Lassere as his ground ball up the middle brought home Woodall to make it 4-3.

Down to their last half inning Millsaps loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th. With one out Cooper hit a chopper near the third base line. He beat it out for an infield single, which allowed Woodall to score. The Lion third baseman made an errant throw on the play which allowed Callaway to score from second, and give the Majors their first walk-off win of the 2018 season.

Senior Jacob Mardick got the start on the mound for the Majors, but it was freshman Conner Haynes who picked up the win in relief. He pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball out of the bullpen.

Next up for Millsaps, nationally ranked LaGrange College comes to Twenty Field for a 4:00pm first pitch on Friday evening. The Majors wrap up the weekend at home on Sunday at 10:00am against North Park University and at 1:00pm against Fontbonne University.
